IS IT TRUE OCTOBER 22, 2018

first_imgWe hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?IS IT TRUE that a loyal reader of the CCO told us that they received their water and sewer bill for this month?  …they are retired and are the only people living at their home? …that their water and sewer bill for last month was around $60 and but this months bill was around $85? …we are now told that we should expect yet another rate increase in our water and sewer bill in the very near future?IS IT TRUE if the powers that be would had listened to former County Commissioner Dave Mosby and Vanderburgh County Sheriff Brad Ellsworth concerning building a larger jail this issue would not be discussed today? …they were correct that the new jail should have been built on the future needs and not the present needs?IS IT TRUE the border between Mexico and the USA is about 9 million feet?… About 1/3 of it already has a wall leaving a maximum need for 6 Million feet of fence, wall, or whatever…Some of it will not be necessary because it is the Rio Grande river?… At $1,000 per foot, this works out to $6 Billion for the whole darn wall?… For reference, an 8-foot tall chain link fence is $10 per foot and a block wall is $80 per foot?… Hadrian’s Wall that was built by the Romans to keep the Scots out of England is only about 6 feet tall but it had guards stationed to prevent unwanted crossings?IS IT TRUE there are fences and guard shacks at the border crosses and that fences away from border crossings are not much more sophisticated than the ones around a residence?… A halfway competent construction team should be able to build a wall for $6 Billion or less?… That would include trenching under it to make digging under difficult and a state of the art surveillance system?… From a pure construction perspective, a wall should be simple and the cost should be way less than the numbers being tossed about in the media?IS IT TRUE just because a wall exists does not guarantee it will work to prevent illegal immigration?…most illegals come here through existing portals and not through the desert at night?… The wall would be a deter walking across the border away from border crossings, but not for air travel, day workers, or those who are smuggled in by coyotes (Slang for the surly jerks who essentially kidnap people into the country and exploit them for labor and sex trafficking)? Is It True if a wall is to actually work, it would need a guard or two every mile with shoot to kill authority and/or bloodhounds to round people up?… An armed solution may work, but it is highly unlikely that the American public would support such a draconian process?IS IT TRUE that from a construction perspective, even an idiotic government that pays $700 for a hammer and $500 for toilet seats should be able to build a 6M foot wall for under $25B and there is plenty of graft for friends, relatives, and patronage managers in that figure?… If they really want to save some money they should pay Mexico to build the wall as they could probably build it for less than a billion dollars and permitting wouldn’t even be an issue?IS IT TRUE that working walls exist in many places including most newer schools, airports, private businesses, houses, gated communities, and even the White House?…the real question is whether or not spending good money on a wall is a wise thing to do given the process it takes to make it work and the ease of entry by other methods?IS IT TRUE We highly recommend that you take time and pull up the Channel 44 link posted on the upper right-hand corner in our publication.  …we know that you will find this link an extremely interesting read?IS IT TRUE that our Publisher is scheduled to undergo a serious heart operation later this week? …we would like to ask you to say a prayer on his behalf?Todays“Readers Poll” question is: If the election was held today in the District 76 State Representative race who would you vote for?If you would like to advertise on the CCO please contact us [email protected]: City-County Observer Comment Policy.  Be kind to people. Half-time: Chelsea 1 Man Utd 2

first_imgJuan Mata’s free-kick late in the first half gave Chelsea a boost after they had found themselves two down after only 11 minutes following David Luiz’s own goal and Robin van Persie’s simple finish.Manchester United went ahead when the ball dribbled over the line after Van Persie’s shot struck the post and then the unfortunate Luiz.Luck went against the Premier League leaders on that occasion, but they had no-one but themselves to blame for the second goal.Antonio Valencia had time on the left and after Chelsea failed to clear the Ecuadorian’s low cross, Van Persie was able to smash home from five yards.Chelsea ended the half strongly and almost scored when defender Jonny Evans turned John Obi Mikel’s cross onto his own post and Gary Cahill went close with a header from the resulting corner.Visiting keeper David De Gea then produced a fine save to deny Fernando Torres but was beaten by Mata’s curling effort. Before the game, United’s Rio Ferdinand shook hands with Ashley Cole following speculation about whether he would snub the Blues left-back during the traditional pre-match routine.Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Cech; Ivanovic, Luiz, Cahill, Cole; Mikel, Ramires; Hazard, Oscar, Mata, Torres. Subs: Turnbull, Romeu, Moses, Marin, Sturridge, Azpilicueta, Bertrand.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

Aurora Cannabis more than ready with pot supply for legalization

first_imgTORONTO – Licensed marijuana producer Aurora Cannabis Inc. says it is “unequivocally” ready for the legalization of recreational pot in Canada next month, with enough supply to meet all its commitments to provinces and territories.Aurora’s chief corporate officer Cam Battley adds that the cannabis firm doesn’t foresee the need for supply agreements with other licensed producers to bridge inventory gaps.“We’ve got all of our product categories ready,” he told analysts on a conference call discussing its latest quarterly earnings on Tuesday.“So, we’re more than ready for consumer legalization. And more than that, our ramp-up in production is happening at exactly the right time. We’re not going to be dumping old, stockpiled, stale product on the market.”Aurora’s comments come as Canada prepares to legalize recreational cannabis for adult use on Oct. 17.Executives of the Edmonton-based cannabis company would not disclose the current size of its inventory in kilograms, but said it has been ramping up its production capacity.Aurora anticipates that by the end of 2018 it will be able to produce 150,000 kilograms per year. The company has eight licensed production facilities, compared with one fully licensed facility and two under construction one year ago, Battley said.Aurora has $88 million in proforma inventory and biological assets, including that of MedReleaf Corp., chief financial officer Glen Ibbott said. Aurora signed a $3.2-billion deal to acquire MedReleaf in May.Aurora’s latest quarterly earnings capped off a busy year with fourth-quarter revenues of $19.1 million, more than triple the $5.9 million in revenues it saw a year ago. For the full year, revenues increased to $55.2 million from $18.1 million in 2017.Net income attributable to shareholders for the quarter was nearly $80 million, up from a $4.82 million loss a year ago.The increase was primarily attributable to the unrealized non-cash gain on derivatives and marketable securities, which was partially offset by increased finance costs, share-based payments, acquisition and project evaluation costs.Analyzing the performance of a marijuana company is tough because of accounting rules used in the agriculture industry that require companies to put a value on their pot plants before they are harvested, and approaches differ between producers on how to apply these guidelines.Meanwhile, the company’s operating expenses soared as the marijuana producer prepared for the impending domestic adult-use market on Oct. 17 and expanded its reach outside of Canada.Aurora’s general and administration costs increased to $22.6 million in the fourth-quarter, compared with $9.8 million in the previous quarter and $2 million in the same period a year ago. Sales and marketing costs also rose to $14.8 million, compared with $3.6 million in the same quarter a year ago.The company said this increase was due to investments in its brand strategy including one-time activities in preparation for legalization, but also stemmed from the integration of Saskatoon-based licensed producer CanniMed, which Aurora acquired earlier this year.Aurora also reiterated its plans to list Aurora on a “senior, U.S. exchange,” subject to the appropriate approvals. This move, which the company had mentioned publicly earlier this year, comes after a wild ride for marijuana stocks in recent weeks.“This listing provides access to a broader investor audience,” Battley said.(Companies in this story: TSX:ACB)last_img read more

COAI seeks roadmap to resolve issues plaguing telecom sector

first_imgNew Delhi: Industry body COAI on Tuesday said the new government post elections should set out a clear roadmap to ease the burden of levies on the telecom sector, and issues including cut in licence fee and spectrum charges should be taken up at the earliest, preferably in 6-9 months’ timeframe. COAI rued that revenue continues to remain under pressure for the industry saddled with high debt, and for most players the earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization or EBITDA generated “is not enough to meet the interest expenses”. Also Read – Thermal coal import may surpass 200 MT this fiscal”The definition of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) should be reviewed to include revenue from licensed activities only … Telecom Department should adopt the recommendations given by the regulator on the issue of determination of AGR,” Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) Director General Rajan S Mathews told reporters here. COAI said that income from interest, dividend, capital gains from sale of fixed assets, gains from forex fluctuation, income from rent, insurance claims, and distributors margin should not be included in the revenue of the telecom operators for the purpose of computation of licence fee and spectrum usage charges. Also Read – Food grain output seen at 140.57 mt in current fiscal on monsoon boostAlso, revenue from sale of handsets and other subscriber terminals like routers should also be not included in the AGR, it said. “Once you address the AGR definition issue, it has cascading benefits.. that is the first thing they (the new Government) should look at. Second, the issue of double taxation…you have got payment for spectrum up-front why are you continuing to tax the industry for the spectrum usage charge and licence…TRAI already recommended that SUC should come down to 1 per cent and licence fee should come down too,” he said. He added that if these outstanding issues are dealt with in the first 6-9 months by the new government post elections, it would yield “sizable benefits” for the industry. “It would also send a clear signal to both industry and investors that the government is serious about getting the sector back on its feet,” Mathews said. Some of the major demands of the industry include reforms in AGR finalization, allowing deductions of lease line/bandwidth charges and the charges paid by one telecom operator to another as `pass through charges’, alignment of the bank guarantees with the licence fee and SUC payouts of telecom operators, and refund of accumulated unutilised input tax credit, among others. Under the Unified License Agreement, the licence fee currently is 8 per cent of the AGR. Further, in case the operator obtains spectrum, they also pay spectrum related charges, including payment for allotment and use of such radiowaves. Over the past few years, India’s telecom market had become cut-throat where nearly a dozen players jostled for market share, pummelling the call rates to among the lowest in the world. Competition has only intensified since 2016, when Reliance Jio Infocomm, owned by India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani, stormed into the market and offered free calls and dirt cheap data. This triggered massive consolidation in the industry the most prominent being that of Vodafone and Idea.last_img
